This is my confession.

And here’s another for everyone saying this secret is trying to “stir shit up”.

The Sanctuary fandom on Tumblr is one of the most hypocritical fandoms I have ever encountered.

Non-stop bitching about spoilers, yet my dash is LITTERED with spoilers within 15 minutes of the episode ending.

Non-stop bitching about a lack of respect for people’s opinions, yet as soon as someone even DARES to mention that they disagree with the popular opinion, there is bitching.

Honestly, this fandom is ruining this show for me. I stopped watching it live this year because I’d had enough of all the spoilers and the dissecting of every single scene to prove that your ship is TOTALLY GOING TO BE CANON AT SOME POINT!! That every episode that DOESN’T have a specific character in it was horrible.

Good. God.

I’m not ready to break up with it yet, I’m gonna try and watch the whole season after the season finale hype has died down, but still.

And before you guys all start with the “Well, my unfollow button is right there!” I have already unfollowed most of the people who are the main offenders but if I unfollowed everyone, Fuck Yeah Grand Empress would shrivel up and die.

So, there you have it. My unpopular opinion/rant to the Sanctuary fandom.

You may now continue ignoring my tumblr/going about your business.

I think where the “stirring up shit” portion of this comes from is that you specifically call out one group of shippers but in your elaboration, most of your complaints are generally about fandom itself.  For example, being upset that a certain character’s not on this episode?  I highly doubt that’s Helen/Will shippers considering Robin’s in every episode of the show.

As far as spoilers go?  I highly doubt ONLY the Helen/Will shippers are posting spoilers.  Everyone who ships something in this fandom is passionate about it and will defend it to the death, which is part of the reason the fandom is so divided.  Perhaps you didn’t mean to single out one group of people (or maybe you did) but that’s more the issue than your actual issues, which are valid and would put anyone off watching the show.

But I challenge you to find shippers of Tesla/Magnus or Druitt/Magnus who aren’t just as vocal and passionate about their ships as Helen/Will shippers are and, frankly, there’s a hell of a lot more of them out there.  Helen/Will is hardly a popular ship.

But it does suck that some people’s enjoyment/passion for the show has made yours diminish.

Honestly, I mentioned the Helen/Will shippers because that’s what 90% of the Sanctuary blogs that I follow ship. They are also the ones that I find are most guilty of the things I called them out on. Maybe it was crass and the wrong way of doing it, but there it is.

Yeah, it’s allllll perspective, then, because everyone who ships something in this fandom is guilty of the above things and I’m not going to sit here and bash other ships, that’s not productive, but you’ve got blinders on if you think the other shippers aside from Helen/Will don’t do the same things.

As far as spoilers go, best advice to you is to stay off the internet.  That’s the risk you take when you go on Tumblr 15 minutes after a show airs and people are excited about it.

I am so confused by all of this. I have literally never seen people act the way this makes them out to act.

I follow so many Sanctuary blogs, because it’s my favorite show and fandom. I am a Helen/Will shipper, a Helen/James shipper, to some extent both a Helen/Tesla and Helen/John shipper. I follow people who are multishippers like me. I follow people who have only an OTP. I follow non-shippers.

The people I follow are really good friends with one another. I get excited when the show comes on. I do my reaction posts every week. But I read-more cut them, and I try to follow the 24-hour-spoiler rule. I don’t think gifs are spoilers, but I realize to some people they are, and I realize I could be much better at tagging things with “spoiler.” We all could.

It hurts me that people go out of their way to fight with people. Lisa and I are GREAT friends. Helen/Will is both of our OTPs. But she does not multiship at all, and that is my greatest fandom pleasure. This does NOT matter at all - she laughs when I go off on a random tangent about Helen/James or something, I laugh when she looks cross-eyed at something of another ship.

FANDOM IS SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT INCLUSION. Especially this fandom. The show is all about equality - who are we to act like one view of the characters/show/plot/whatever is better than another?!

^ This.  I really don’t understand why there was a need to call out a certain ship for a basic fandom gripe.

… All of this just confuses the holy hell out of me. I’m sorry, am I missing some massive fandom gripe lately? Because I love each and every one of you. Just a few nights ago, there was such a massive love spam between all of us that I think I developed diabetes. Dear god. WHY am I not seeing all this hate? Are you guys hiding it from me? Are you all just like, “Ooo, Ash thinks drama is lulzy. Let’s hide all our drama from her so that she thinks Tumblr is boring! Yeah!”

^ Exactly. There’s a reason I started answering all my asks with “Sanctuary fandom, you’re doing it right” - it’s not because we fight. QUITE THE OPPOSITE.

I had so many love!messages in my ask two days ago, and yesterday, and today - I think everyone in fandom sent me one or something.

Where is all this hate coming from?!?! I am so confused! I love you all, I don’t ever want anyone to feel excluded from watching such a marvelous show and having such marvelous friends!!

I really don’t think your experiences are typical.  I’m glad you’ve had those experiences, believe me, but I regularly receive flames on my fics because I dare write Helen/Will, LJ (lol when I deigned to go over there) is wall to wall with posts about how Will is whiny, Will sucks, Will is awful and the second you disagree, you get smacked.

Icon makers cut main characters out of their icons and get applauded for it.  Big bang artists refuse to make art for Kate, Will, people not The Five…so there is definitely hate out there, it just depends on the circles you’re in.

I am lucky that the handful of people I follow on tumblr do seem to be more inclusive than the rest of fandom but the OP’s original statement/confession is very typical of this fandom.

Which isn’t to hate on the OP, far from it.  Her actual gripes had very little to do with Helen/Will and much more to do with fandom as a whole.  I think it’s a matter of perspective.  What you see as inclusive, loving, good times may appear to someone outside the clique as inside jokes, exclusivity, trololol you’re not l33t enough to hang with us.

And, unfortunately, for a lot of people that perception CAN be reality and it can put them off something they do enjoy.  It’s happened to me before and I can hardly be the only one.

I’m so sorry for this. I hate that people act like they own a show and treat anyone who disagrees with them like crap.

My brother and my best friend are also Sanctuary fans. Neither has tumblr. Neither does fandom. Neither is a shipper. Christopher doesn’t have a favorite character, he laughs his head off when I jabber about how much I love Helen or Amanda. Leah’s favorite character is Will. She laughs at me when I shout FLAWLESS HUMAN BEING at Amanda and sqeaul when Helen and Will have a scene together.

I wish all of fandom could be like that, because this is meant to bring us together, not tear us apart. Anyone who thinks that we’re some sort of clique with inside jokes or such, please, talk to any of us (Cec, Di, Lisa, Justine, Jocelyn, Cee, Amanda…oh so many more, my brain dies as soon as I start listing names) and tell us how you feel, all we want to do is be inclusive. Or at least that’s how I see it, if anyone disagrees with me please feel free to say so.

I recently had a nearly screaming fit that there aren’t enough pictures of Agam Darshi to use for art. I’m much more into the present cast than the Five era, even though I absolutely love the Five.

I just can’t stand anyone being excluded. It makes me hurt inside.

I think the issue is that it’s intimidating.  It’s intimidating to come into a fandom and be bombarded with inside jokes out the wazoo with one group of people and then outright hate in other corners.  Encouraging people to drop something in your ask box is awesome, believe me, but getting up the courage to do that when you already see this group is so tight and so into EACH OTHER can completely be perceived as “why would they want me, they already have XYZ.”

Especially if someone is coming from a portion of fandom that’s not so nice, the natural perception is to be a bit wary.  Wank goes on behind the scenes, too, that might not necessarily be reflected in the majority of someone’s posts but is there all the same and people can be surprisingly perceptive to that sort of thing whether you think so or not.

But I don’t think this is any different from any other corner of society.  Populations tend to drift together based on common interests, social groups form a hierarchy within a microcosm such as school or work. It’s problematic to say “people shouldn’t have cliques and inside jokes” because for those within the group and on the top of the hierarchy, it feels GOOD to belong, especially if that person is excluded in another arena of their life.

But I also think it’s problematic to say that wank doesn’t exist or that the fandom is all happy bunnies because stepping out from our own groups, I can definitely say from my experience, those things DO exist.  I’m guilty of it myself, certainly, and I can’t be the only one.

Thank you so much for saying all these things, they really give me a different perspective and look at how I might have treated people in the past.

I wish I understood why people think it’s okay to treat others like crap. Because then I might be able to fix it.

And I think people treat others badly for a variety of reasons.  Maybe they think it’s funny and, with the anonymous barrier of the internet, it’s a LOT easier to be trololol HOW CAN YOU SHIP THAT LOSER because you can click off the box and not see those people.  

Sometimes you can be so blinded by what you believe and what you love that other opinions don’t matter or don’t exist.  Maybe you’re like me and you’re constantly having to defend your favorite character that even when you get a comment that’s ambiguous, you AUTOMATICALLY think the worst.  I certainly do, when it comes to Will, and that’s not good.  I don’t think the whole internet’s out to lynch Will Zimmerman.

But I don’t think it’s so black and white as people get on the internet and say HOO BOY IMMA MAKE SOME HELEN/WILL SHIPPERS CRY AND THEN I’M GONNA GO BE EXCLUSIVE WITH MY CLIQUE.  I think it’s a lot more subtle and people are a lot more unaware of it than that.

I think we all get a little TOO passionate about the things we love sometimes and go to the mattress for them, for good or for ill.

It’s so interesting to see your experiences because they’re so different from my own.

I’ve said before that I’m delayed in developing that all-important adult skill of hating people. I just don’t see how sending anon hate (or non-anon hate, or bullying in any way, shape, or form) could be “entertaining” or “fun” or anything.

I hope you can find your niche here on tumblr, because I know I am always excited when someone new (or old, depending on your viewpoint :) ) joins our fandom. It’s so small, we never need anyone hating on anyone else.
